The study had several limitations. First, questions regarding medical cannabis use were limited to only the past month. Thus, it is not known how these results would translate to medical cannabis use in more recent years. It is likely that past-month use has decreased in recent years. However, over a third of respondents stated that they believed that medical cannabis was less available now than in the past. This would suggest that prevalence is increasing, but use patterns and effectiveness are decreasing. This is supported by the fact that only 1 in 5 respondents used medical cannabis to manage a medical condition. Respondents were also likely to misclassify medical conditions as cannabis related. The majority of respondents, for example, reported using cannabis to manage pain, despite a lack of support for the use of medical cannabis to treat chronic pain ([@bib0070]; [@bib0120]).
Second, data were collected via an online survey. Thus, there may be bias in the type of respondents that completed the survey. Future studies should use a more representative sampling method to better understand whether or not study findings can be generalizable to the broader US population. Third, respondents self-reported their medical conditions. As such, this study cannot definitively confirm the causality of medical cannabis and outcomes studied. Fourth, the survey did not account for individuals who are prescribed medical cannabis that do not use it. Fifth, because of the survey design, it is not possible to determine how many respondents answered the question regarding self-reported medical conditions. Thus, the prevalence of certain conditions that may be more prevalent in people who use cannabis may have been underestimated. Sixth, the survey was directed at a population of those who use marijuana to cope with their medical conditions. Therefore, the generalizability of study findings to all people with a medical condition may be limited.
